He leaves his daughter to his cousin, a northern woman she has never seen, and asks her to be good to May for his sake, as the girl is alone in the world. Later when the two woman are alone with the dead, May is struck by a shell and apparently killed. The spy, seeing a chance to escape, takes the letter from May, disguising herself in the clothing of the supposed dead girl, and goes north, where she is warmly greeted by the family, who take her for a relative. May is found by the Union troops, who have captured the entrenchment, and a doctor discovers that she is not dead. Her recovery is slow, however, and before she has a chance to go north, the impostor has firmly settled herself with her cousin, who believes her implicitly. In fact she desires to see her married to her son, although he is not inclined to the union. When May arrives, shabby and pale, she is denounced as an impostor, both by her cousin and the usurper. Fortunately for May, however, the child of a neighbor has overheard the impostor offer May a sum of money to go away, and at the same time, believing herself alone, has sneeringly admitted that she is sailing under false colors, but declares that her victim cannot prove it. May is just about to be turned away a second time, despite the sympathy of John, who is half inclined to believe her story, when the boy confronts the impostor, and his evidence, together with a severe cross-examination by the indignant John, force her to confess her fraud, and leave the home where she has no right. May kisses the child who has aided her, and is grateful to the man who proved himself a friend when everyone else made haste to disown her.
- Prince Ludwig, of Gravania, is very wild and indulges himself in many dissipations which reflect no credit on the good name of the reigning family. He has a double in his servant Enrico whom he dresses in his uniform when he leaves the palace so that his absence will not be noticed. Enrico is in love with a pretty peasant girl, Valerie, who in turn is faithful to him. On one of the rides through the royal parks Prince Ludwig sees the girl and falls desperately in love with her. True to Enrico, however, she repulses the Prince. He not being used to have his wishes frustrated has the girl kidnapped and brought to his room in the palace. Before the Prince returns Enrico accidentally enters. Valerie tells him of her plight and he helps her escape through a secret passage. Valerie has no sooner disappeared from the room than the Prince enters and a quarrel starts between him and his servant in which the Prince is killed. News comes almost simultaneously that the king is dead, and Enrico dressing himself in the prince's uniform goes out and passes himself off as the prince. Later the body of the supposed servant, but in reality the prince is found, and the blame is laid upon the newly made servant-king. The cabinet decides to make way with the king because of his scoundrelly action in killing his servant. When Enrico goes to the home of Valerie to declare himself truly the trap is laid by the chief of police. Valerie recognizes her true lover and tries to aid him to escape, but the paths are too well guarded and the false Enrico falls a victim to his own ambition.

Sam refused to release his prisoner to the "marshal" until He got permission from Marshal Morrison. Sam tried his best to explain that he was just a deputy and had no authority to release him. They just wanted Remmick gone. They didn't want to wait.
